Is that a star satellite or a planet in my sky??

I live in Delta BC which is not to far from Vancouver. Can someone please tell me what it is I see every clear night in the sky. It is very bright and does not move I always thought that satellites moved but my brother in law (not at all that bright) says that I am worng ( he always says I am wrong) when I say it is either a planet (venus) or a star (supernova) because satellites move they don't stay there for us to marvel at. Please help me.
