Why do human-babies take so long to fend for themselves?

i heard somewhere that human babies are not fully functional as early as other anumals because that have to be born earlier due to the size. if they were to stay in the womb any longer they would not be able to be born naturally. i dont know how true this is but it might be part of the reason why
