She said that she was her husband's legs. By that she meant she went where her husband could not go. She bolstered morale, she did public relations gigs, visited a coal mine once after there had been a cave in, she arranged for Marian Anderson to sing on the Washington Mall on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after Anderson was denied access to some segregated venue. She was our national grandma. People loved and appreciated all she did for them and so it made her husband more popular with the people.
