Wireless Internet Says Connected but going online says i'm not?

On my Faince's laptop when he goes to connect to a unsecured hotspot the hotspot connects but when he goes to internet explorer or anything dealing with the internet it says he's not connected. We've deleted all the connections hotspots of the computer setting off his computer and still no connection. Help?
